Thorpe Farm is a diverse broad acre, niche and boutique farm that has been running for seven generations of the Bignell family.
The farm is a large scale commodity producer of wool and prime lambs running approximately 12,000 sheep on 2600 ha. There is a nucleus flock of 150 milking ewes for sheep milk and cheese making, also contributing maternal genetics to the crossbred meat flock.
A 140 ha overhead irrigation scheme enables poppy growing, lamb fodder crops and cereals for dairy farmers in the region. 85 ha of flood irrigation supports summer pasture for the premium mid-winter lamb market.
The business has diversified over the last 40 years, developing new industries for Tasmanian and Australian agriculture including developing deer farming techniques and the venison industry, crossbreeding sheep breeds for meat and milk production, growing certified strawberry runners, European Horseradish, White Salsify, Schorzonera and Jerusalem Artichokes.
Thorpe Farm is also a pioneer in aquatic wasabi growing and garlic growing.
Thorpe Farm is home to Australia’s oldest working watermill which is run for tour groups and there is a second 180 year old stone mill used to grind flour for local bakers and wholefood stores around Hobart. Thorpe Farm also grow and mentor other growers to produce specialty grains for the milling sector with a focus on Spelt and Ryecorn.
